Let me first start by saying, I simply love EveryDollar because I have been using the program for a while and have personal experience with it.
I am not posting this blog post for any other reason than I really enjoy the platform and use it myself.
I want to do this review of EveryDollar because many times I get asked the question, “what should I use to do my budget?”
My answer is always the same, because of the simple layout and the easy to use design.
What is it?
EveryDollar is a free budgeting program that is available as an application on your phone. You can also access your account on your desktop computer.
While the app is free, there is a paid option. This paid option links to your checking account and automatically has your transactions pop up.
I personally like the free version because I like inputting each purchase right when I make one. Doing this allows me to be more intentional about my tracking.
Basically, the whole idea of EveryDollar is to make it easy on you to set up your budget, and continually use it each month. It does the math for you when you’re budgeting everything out, allows you to track transactions, and really assists you in knowing where you’re at, at all times.
When I Started Using EveryDollar
I’ve been using EveryDollar for a long time. It has been about 3 years that I have been using the program.
I first started because I was having a tough time figuring out where my money was going. I remember trying to create an Excel spreadsheet that would tell me what was going on. The spreadsheet made me realize I was working backward, I would look at what I already spent, instead of planning into the future what I wanted to spend.
Once I realized I needed a more comprehensive approach, I heard Dave Ramsey on the radio mention a program they had available. Being an avid fan of Dave Ramsey, I downloaded it right away and from that moment on I have absolutely loved using the application.
How It Works
As I mentioned early, EveryDollar is an application and available on a normal desktop computer.
It works in a simple way that takes your income and subtracts your expenses as you plan out your month.
The cool thing is, it does all the math for you. The idea is to give every dollar that comes into your account, a purpose and a place to go (hence the name!).
One of my favorite things about it is that it is so simple and easy to use. This is definitely a bonus.
If you’re interested in learning more about the app, there are these two youtube videos that others have made and I found a while back. They do a great job explaining the app:
- This one is a simple overview but does a good job explaining it
- This one is longer and a little more in-depth
How My Wife and I Use It
I used EveryDollar on my own as a single guy for quite some time. It allowed me to reach a lot of really great goals. I saved up my emergency fund, saved up for my wife’s engagement ring, and had overall confidence in knowing what was going on with my finances.
Once my wife and I got married, we started using the program together. This really helps keep us on the same page with our finances.
The cool thing is that since we share an account we are always updated together.
For instance, if I go to the grocery store and log a transaction, it will automatically update my wife’s app.
Not only does the app keep us on the same page, but it allows our communication about our money to be really effective.
We can make decisions based on our budget, right from the palm of our hand with the app open!
Who Should Use It?
Anyone that is looking for an easy to use system that can help you with your budgeting and your tracking should absolutely try EveryDollar.
If you have ever been in the place with your money where you’re wondering where it is going, this is definitely for you. I would say that anyone that is new to budgeting, or has used a method in the past that they don’t absolutely love, try EveryDollar!
If you’re looking for a great budgeting app, I definitely recommend using EveryDollar for your budgeting needs. Give it a try and let me know what you think. What do you use to do your budget each month? Let me know in the comments!
